Obstetric Physicians are specialist internal medicine physicians who work alongside other members of the maternity team to help care for women with complex medical conditions. Their expertise allows them to manage medical conditions in pregnancy and coordinate care when the input from other specialists is needed.
The Royal College of Physicians now offers Credentials In Obstetric Medicine which can be completed at registrar or consultant level. In addition, specialist registrars training in Acute Medicine can study Obstetric Medicine as their specialist skill.
Training can be undertaken at regional centres via national recruitment. St. George’s Hospital has submitted a proposal to become a training centre for Obstetric Physicians and aims to become a training centre in 2025.
